On March 10, 1906, a dust explosion occurred at the Courrières coal mine in northern France. The explosion killed 1,099 people, two-thirds of the total number of miners working at the time, including many children. The accident is considered the worst mining disaster in European history.

After the cooling water was introduced, a large amount of cooling water entered the molten steel and exploded, causing 3 deaths, 2 serious injuries, and 13 minor injuries.
