The two best known benchmarks in safety internationally are the US American ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 and the European EN 15154 series standards.

In contrast, EN 15154 offers a risk-based classified structure: ≥ 60 L/min for laboratories, and Class 1 to 3 (30–100+ L/min) for industrial sites. This allows facilities under EN standards to optimize water usage based on chemical hazard assessments.

Eyewashes: ANSI specifies ≥ 1.5 L/min (0.4 GPM) for eyewashes and ≥ 11.4 L/min (3.0 GPM) for eye/face washes. EN 15154 sets eyewash flow at ≥ 6 L/min and eye/face wash at ≥ 10 L/min.

3. Maintenance & Installation

Water Temperature: ANSI strictly mandates tepid water between 16°C–38°C, whereas EN recommends 15°C–37°C (ideal: 20°C–25°C).

Testing Frequency: ANSI requires weekly activation and flushing tests, while EN standardizes monthly inspections, though local European rules may increase frequency.

Flushing Duration & Location: Both standards mandate at least 15 minutes of flushing duration and requiring equipment to be reachable within 10 seconds.
